    As the Program Coordinator for the UCSD Underground Scholars Program, Shawn Khalifa is committed to empowering formerly incarcerated and system-impacted students on their academic and personal journeys. In his role, Shawn provides mentorship, facilitates access to essential resources, and advocates for policies that promote equity and inclusion for system-impacted populations. He also serves as a bridge between students and campus administration, fostering a supportive environment that amplifies the voices of those with lived experiences. Shawn’s dedication to restorative justice and transformative education underscores his work to create meaningful change within the university and beyond.

    Joaquin Mena Jr. is the Recruitment Coordinator for the Triton Underground Scholars Program. With years of experience working in the community and a passion for education, Joaquin is committed to helping system-impacted students succeed academically and personally.  Joaquin firmly believes that education is the key to breaking the cycles of incarceration and recidivism, and he is dedicated to creating a more equitable and just society for all. In his free time, Joaquin enjoys hiking, reading, and spending time with his family.

His passion for organization and leadership allows him to foster an inclusive space where students can thrive, collaborate, and build a strong foundation for their futures. Through his role, Pablo strives to bridge opportunities and empower others to navigate their own academic and personal growth with data-driven confidence and ambition.

    A Passionate Advocate and Community Connector Lucia is a dedicated Retention Coordinator with a compelling story of resilience and growth. Originally from Maryland, Lucia relocated to San Diego five years ago, where she found a vibrant community and meaningful connections. Her journey took a transformative turn when a classmate's project introduced her to the impactful program, The Underground Scholars (TUS). Fueled by a passion for social justice, Lucia enrolled at San Diego City College, where she earned associate degrees in Social Work and Sociology. She later transferred to UC San Diego to deepen her studies in Sociology, furthering her commitment to making a difference. Lucia’s journey highlights the impact of community, education, and perseverance, inspiring her commitment to supporting others in their paths to transformation.
